John Gartner, senior research director at Navigant Research, joined the speaker roster for the second annual Auto Finance Innovation event, slated to take place May 17 – 18 in San Diego.
Gartner will present “Vehicle of the Future,” to delve into what the future of vehicles and transportation could look like.
There is not likely to be a “huge aftermarket opportunity” for autonomous cars — considering the vehicles will more integrated and OEMs will retain ownership of the cars for safety purposes — but there could be more servicing opportunities, Sam Abuelsamid, senior research analyst (and Gartner’s colleague) at Navigant Research, told Mobility Buzz.
“I think in order for an autonomous system to be robust and safe, it needs to be integrated in the vehicle, so there is not much [aftermarket] business opportunity there,” he said. Although many will try to offer certain add-on products, “I really don’t think any will be successful,” he added.
However, there are other elements of the mobility ecosystem that will provide some interesting business opportunities, like the dealer network, he said. Since OEMs will likely retain control of the self-driving vehicles to limit liability, this could leave room for dealers to serve as “mobility managers” and offer servicing packages, he added. The servicing packages could include routine maintenance as well as electric vehicle charging.
Additional sessions at Auto Finance Innovation include “Advancing the Culture of Innovation,” in which Miranda Hill, director of commerce strategy at the software disruption company Thought Works; Todd Nelson, business development officer at Lightstream; and Matt Traylen, head of financial services at Faraday Future, will discuss how to foster a culture of innovation within a company.
Auto Finance Innovation is a two-day conference hosted by sister publications Auto Finance News and Mobility Buzz covering the latest innovations occurring in the vehicle finance sector.
