RideCell Inks Deal to Bring Mobility Services to Auro’s Driverless Shuttles

RideCell Inc. has teamed up with Auro Robotics to bring more efficient operating solutions to Auro’s autonomous shuttle service at universities and campuses, starting with the University of Santa Clara in California.

But that’s not all RideCell has up its sleeve.

In the past year, mobility upstart RideCell has tripled in size, geared up with tech talent, and has started to work on a new pilot for BMW’s ReachNow program. RideCell is now focusing on further expansion and autonomous vehicles.

“We are 60 people now, up from 20 a year ago, and we will be 200 at the end of 2017,” Mark Thomas, the company’s vice president of marketing, told Mobility Buzz.

RideCell provides and powers a white-label platform that enables carsharing, ridesharing, car rental, and fixed-route services for 15 customers, including BMW, UCLA, and now, Auro Robotics.

There are other partnerships, similar to the Auro deal, that will be announced this year, Thomas said, but declined to offer specifics.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based Auro Robotics builds driverless, zero-emission shuttles that provide accessible transportation around university and company campuses, as well as to and from transit centers.

Auro has multiple campus trials underway, but is currently powering shuttle service at the University of Santa Clara. Through the RideCell app, students and faculty will be able to request a shuttle on demand. RideCell provides automated scheduling and dispatch solutions for Auro’s fleet, but it will also ease up the process for Auro to manage and maintain its shuttles.

“What we are doing in the autonomous space is we have the ability to integrate predictive maintenance models, from Tier 1 vendors to auto OEMs, so that 90-something-percent of all maintenance can be accurately predicted,” Thomas said. This allows the autonomous vehicle to be fixed, preventively upgraded, or swapped out so there aren’t issues with vehicles failing in the field.

For example, RideCell provides built-in alerts to instruct shuttles when it’s time to head to a charging station and inform shuttle operations of the optimal low-use time for maintenance. Additionally, Auro can utilize real-time analytics to reduce customer wait time and serve more riders through RideCell’s remote tracking and monitoring.
